Borrowed Air
I drift toward black and white—
under the pretence of charcoal,
towards settings that don’t quite know me.
There, I gather what the moment offers:
a silhouette slipping across my vision,
the quiet curve of a contour
caught from wherever I happen to sit.
A canopy leaning overhead,
a fire hydrant standing guard,
carpark gantries holding their breath,
wall trophies whispering in stillness,
even staircases—ascending, descending—
all find their way into my pad
without asking.
Surrender approaches,
Automatism takes hold—
my mind passes its grip to the “Pencil”
It skates across the icy canvas
Without permission,
without map or measure,
until something begins to stir.
Forms conspire like dark clouds
They cling, they twist, they become—
an ecosystem of unfamiliar beings,
strange and intertwined,
some reaching outward,
some straining against their own edges,
as if escape were a memory
they cannot quite recall. Ouch.
These next works were born elsewhere—
in borrowed air,
amid the gentle chaos of distraction—
each place dispersing its grace,
each moment sniffing quietly beneath the surface.
